“Show Me the Money”

Green energy companies of today face a unique challenge in the United States. There is a great outcry from the general public on the need for green tech, green building, green energy, green fuel etc. The problem is that we all want these things, but there are only a few of us that are willing to invest in these ventures unless they are backed by a big conglomerate with deep pockets.

Those companies who do not have a big backer must go down the traditional route of growth either through Friends and Family, Venture Capital or Investment Banking. To be able to do this successfully as a start-up means having a significant “rolodex” of contacts who can help raise money or build a significant “rolodex” for this purpose.

The other challenge facing a green energy start-up is the simple fact that these types of projects require multiple millions of dollars ($20M+) not $1-5M as is typical with a software company or smaller tech company. Therefore, it is hard to fund these types of ventures with the normal types of capital sources listed above.

The last challenge is internal to the company and it is one of the main reasons GEM was formed. It relates to marketing, web technology, and public relations as a unified solution and using the web as a tool for the vast majority of the operational functions a green company would need to survive and thrive in the digital age.
